CTI is scheduling the Champions of Community Action event

DRACUT – Local Nonprofit Community Teamwork Inc. will honor community members during the biggest fundraising event of the year at the Four Oaks Country Club from 6:00 pm to 9:00 pm. Thursday, May 26.

At the Champions of Community Action event, CTI will honor Bill Lipchitz for 50 years of community action; Pam and Jim Houlares, for their work as philanthropists in early education; and Aleksandra and Bobby Tugbiyele, for their commitment as supporters of diversity, equity and inclusion.

Participants’ donations / sponsorships of $ 1,000 or more qualify for the Community Investment Tax Credit Program, which provides the donor with a 50% Massachusetts tax credit / refund for their donation / sponsorship.

Pollard Memorial Library will host author Jamie Ford

LOWELL – Pollard Memorial Library Foundation will host bestselling author Jamie Ford during his Meet the Author event from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm. Wednesday, May 18.

Ford is the author of the novels “Hotel on the Corner of Bitter and Sweet,” “Love and Other Consolation Prizes,” and “Songs of Willow Frost.” During the event, Ford will talk about his recent books and his new novel, The Many Daughters of Afong Moy, due out in June.

People can participate either in person or virtually.

Tickets will be available at the door on the night of the event, which will take place in Memorial Hall, on the second floor of the library, at Merrimack St. 401.

The free event includes a suggested donation of $ 50 per person or $ 30 virtually.

Lowell students win scholarships from Sheet Metal Workers Local 17

LOWELL – A pair of Lowell High School graduates, Stella Cortese and Iyanci M. Lopez, received scholarships from Sheet Metal Workers Local 17, a division of the SMART Northeast Regional Council.

Lowell recipients received a total of $ 8,000 in funding to support them in their higher education.

The program, funded 100% by Local 17 members, ranges from $ 750 single scholarships to $ 16,000 four-year scholarships totaling $ 16,000. For every one-hour work of a member, seven cents are contributed to the Local 17 Scholarship Fund. Over time, this commitment and collections have made a difference for hundreds of local students in paying tuition, books and other tuition .

“Our scholarship program is part of our union’s commitment to giving back to the communities in which our members live and work,” said SMART NERC President Bob Butler. “When we invest in these hard-working students, we contribute to building the future of these communities.”

Since 1983, the program has awarded more than $ 2.1 million in scholarships based on the results of the state work history exam or a lottery.
